Burghley (Yr 3)

Welcome to 2019 in Burghley Class. In Burghley this year we are lucky enough to have two teachers working with us. Mrs Jesson will be working Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and then Mrs Thomas will be working Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. There will be some time for both our teachers to meet on a Wednesday so that they can make sure all runs smoothly and Burghley is shipshape. We will also have the help of Mrs Chapman and Mrs Fowler at different times during the week.

This term, our theme is called ‘Shipwrecked’.  We will be jumping aboard our ship Burghley the Brave with Captain Catastrophe in charge and sailing across the oceans of the world to see what adventures we can find.

As readers and writers we will be continuing to develop our skills in many ways. We will write messages in bottles from our shipwreck island, create descriptions of stormy seas, write diaries and even scribe a letter to David Attenborough supporting his work with plastic pollution. We will create pirate biographies and

As scientists we will be investigating and finding out all about forces and magnets. We will be helping Captain Catastrophe to solve many problems including which material will be best for him to use when he is making new deck shoes.

As historians, we will be finding out all about famous shipwrecks and investigating what life was like as a pirate. We will find out about famous pirates and their voyages. With Captain Catastrophe in charge, we will find ourselves shipwrecked in a storm. We will use our geography skills to locate and identify the oceans of the world and name islands using Google Earth.

As designers we will be tasked with designing and creating a survival shelter using things we may find on a deserted shipwrecked island.

We will spend some time reflecting on the problem of plastic pollution in the ocean and what we could do to help the situation. We will be taking a trip the seaside to find out how plastic is a real problem for sea life and completing a litter pick to help the beach community we visit.

PE days will continue to be Tuesdays and Fridays.  However, please ensure children have their indoor and outdoor kits in school all week as this can change.

This is another busy and exciting term.  Please may we take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing support with homework including reading and spellings at home.  The children are desperate to achieve their target of having everyone in the class read at least four times per week!
