Funding for my child: PUPIL PREMIUM

Many parents don't often take up the offer of funding that many are entitled to.  This is because it is often mistaken as just being funding for a 'Free School Meal'.  All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are already in receipt of a free school meal - this is known as Universal Infant Free School Meals.  However, there is also the Pupil Premium Funding.  This is a sum of £1385 per pupil (2022-23 amount) for each pupil aged 4 and over in year groups Reception to Year 6, except where the pupil is allocated the LAC (Looked After Child) or post- LAC premium (£2410).  You can find out more about how we use this funding in our report 'Pupil Premium Statement' which can be found in 'Our School' tab.  In short, we can use some of this to support you in buying uniform for your child, paying for school trips and helping your child to engage in extra-curricular activities (e.g. after school clubs and individual/small group music tuition in school).

There have been amendments made to the eligibility criteria for free school meals to reflect the introduction of Universal Credit. These new criteria came into force on 1 April 2018.

How do I know if my child is eligible for PUPIL PREMIUM funding?

Pupil Premium funding, (which includes a free school meal for those not already entitled under the universal infant free school meals scheme) is available to ALL pupils (in all year groups) whose parents are in receipt of one or more of the following benefits:

  • Income Support

  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance

  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance

  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999

  • The guarantee element of Pension Credit

  • Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)

  • Universal Credit - your household income must be less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you get)

  • Working Tax Credit run-on – paid for four weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit

In addition, the following pupils will be protected against losing their pupil premium funding entitlement as follows:

  • From 1 April 2018, all existing Pupil Premium claimants will continue to receive free school meals and the funding that comes with it whilst Universal Credit is rolled out. This will apply even if their earnings rise above the new threshold during that time.

  • In addition, any child gaining eligibility for Pupil Premium funding after 1 April 2018 will be protected against losing this entitlement during the Universal Credit rollout period.

  • Once Universal Credit is fully rolled out, any existing claimants that no longer meet the eligibility criteria at that point (because they are earning above the threshold or are no longer a recipient of Universal Credit) will continue to receive pupil premium funding until the end of their current phase of education (i.e. primary or secondary).

If you would like more information or further advice, please contact the school office to discuss further or go to the following address https://www.gov.uk/apply-free-school-meals, type in your postcode from where you will be taken directly the page for your local authority to apply.  It is a simple process but don't hesitate to contact us if you need help with this.
