Letters and Sounds
At Ryhall CE Academy we follow ‘Letters and Sounds’ to teach phonics.
Letters and Sounds is a six-phase teaching programme designed to help practitioners and teachers teach children how the alphabet works for reading and spelling. Your child’s class teacher will be able to tell you which phase your child is currently working on.
As soon as each set of letters is introduced, children will be encouraged to use their knowledge of the letter sounds to blend and sound out words. For example, they will learn to blend the sounds s-a-t to make the word sat. They will also start learning to segment words. For example, they might be asked to find the letter sounds that make the word tap from a small selection of magnetic letters.
Don’t be phased by some of the language and acronymns used (e.g. CVC meaning consonant/vowel/consonant as in the word cat). There is a separate glossary link for you in this Phonics part of our website (see the links to the left).
